Our summer Intro to Sprint is a two-week, full-day program that builds on from the recreational canoe and kayak skills learned in Canoe Kids to introduce young athletes to competitive sprint racing. Paddlers will learn how to balance, paddle, train and compete in sprint kayaks and canoes while participating in daily training sessions. Campers will be treated to a small ice cream cone at The Green Store at the end of each week and will receive an NBCC T-shirt at the end of the two-week camp.

Note that these camps are designed for children with previous paddling experience. NBCC highly recommends that participants have completed at least one NBCC Program such as Canoe Kids before attending an Intro to Sprint Racing Camp.

All summer campers undergo a swim assessment on their first day of camp that includes swimming 25 metres and treading water for one minute in Trout Lake  This assessment allows our instructors to determine each camper's comfort level in the water. No camper will be turned away due to swim ability as ALL campers, regardless of swim ability, are required to wear a Government of Canada Approved Personal Flotation Device while on or near the water.

Please review the NBCC General WaiverNBCC Code of Conduct, and NBCC Concussion Code of Conduct before registering.

What to Pack for Intro to Sprint Racing Camp

NBCC will provide all the necessary paddling equipment including Personal Floatation Devices (PFD's) but campers are welcome to bring their own PFD. Most days will be spent on the beach and on the lake so children should be prepared for all types of weather. Here are a few things we recommend they bring with them daily:

  • Backpack
  • Shorts, T-shirt and at least one change of clothes. Clothing should be comfortable, loose fitting and preferably made of quick drying fabric (they do get wet!)
  • Swimsuit & towel
  • Running shoes for dryland games
  • Hat, sunscreen & insect repellent
  • Lunch, snacks & water bottles
  • Warm clothes and rain gear for cold, wet days

Children must be independent in their ability to apply sunscreen / insect repellent, change clothes and washroom personal hygiene. There are regular breaks to hydrate and apply sunscreen, but children need to be able to apply their own.

Inclement Weather

Paddlers can still have fun in the rain! However, if there is heavy rain, gusty winds or thunderstorms we can not be on the water. In these situations and when severe weather warnings are issued in advance, NBCC instructors will supervise on-land or indoor activities until the weather improves or normal pick-up times.
